This issue marks one year since Underground first opened its submission pool to students beyond our cozy little corner of Atlanta. That decision truly marked a change in trajectory for the journal. While we already had the privilege of curating the work of the university’s diverse student body, we now have the capacity, the resources, and the time to experience the creativity of individuals we never before had the chance to appreciate properly. Now more than ever, it is imperative that we value art’s ability to lessen the gaps that all varieties of distance place between us. We are extremely fortunate to have such a gift.
If there is one thing to be learned from our change, it is this: the voices of those outside of our immediate surroundings are just as important as those within them. The ability to acknowledge and interact with those perspectives and experiences that differ from our own is vital to our growth, both as a collective and as individuals. We must not shut our ears to those who we perceive to be too far from us to hear—instead, we must lean close, and pay attention.
I, the Underground staff, the wonderful contributors, and all else who made this publication possible, hope that you enjoy the work included within. Thank you for reading.
